GTA6 vs RDR2: how Rockstar's two open worlds differ after 8 years

GTA6 is a little over two months out, and everyone's in a hurry to compare it to the last game. But the game you should actually compare it to is Rockstar's previous project, Red Dead Redemption 2. Eight years apart, both open worlds, and they point in completely different directions. Here's the rundown.
Setting
RDR2 lives in 1899 America's dying frontier, the Van der Linde gang scraping by at the edge of industrialization. GTA6 is modern, the darkest side of the sunniest place: Leonida, with its neon-drenched Vice City. One sits at the edge of civilization, the other at the center of consumer culture. Opposite moods by design.
Protagonists
| RDR2 | GTA6 | |
|---|---|---|
| Count | 1 (Arthur Morgan) | 2 (Lucia Caminos / Jason Duval) |
| Switching | None (brief epilogue switch) | Switch freely, partner-driven |
| Female lead | No | Yes (Lucia, first in the modern series) |
| Relationship | Gang member, no fixed romance | Bonnie-and-Clyde criminal couple |
RDR2 carries its whole story on one man, and Arthur's arc is one of the most complete in games. GTA6 bets on the pair instead, making a couple who commit crimes together the core.
Map and scale
RDR2's map is five states of raw wilderness: snow, swamp, plains, desert, mostly loneliness and distance. GTA6 officially just says "bigger than GTA5"; third parties estimate roughly double or more, centered on the city and six surrounding regions (keys, wetlands, port city, industrial town, national park, and so on).
They mean different things by "big". RDR2 makes you feel the space from horseback; GTA6 makes you feel the density in traffic.
Pacing and story
This is the biggest gap. RDR2 is famously slow: you steer your horse, watch the skinning animation, and the honor system forces you to weigh every good and bad call. Fans say it's a novel you can walk into; critics say it drags.
GTA6's instinct is speed: steal a car, run, shoot, always pushing forward. The official narrative tone reads like a crime film: Jason and Lucia always knew the dice were loaded, but an easy score goes wrong.
Core systems
- RDR2: honor system, hunting and skinning, horse bonding, survival (food, cold, heat), camp management.
- GTA6: a reworked wanted system (a six-star level and clue-based police tracking are rumored, not officially confirmed), vehicle fuel/charging, dual-protagonist switching, social dynamics. The fuel and six-star details come from leaks and previews, so wait for the final game.
Engine and visuals
Both run on the RAGE engine, but eight years and a console generation apart. RDR2 already hit the ceiling of the PS4 era. GTA6 launches only on PS5/Xbox Series X|S, so visuals, density, and AI should step up again. Expect RDR2-level detail, aimed at a modern city instead of the wilds.
Platforms and price
- RDR2: PS4/Xbox One at launch in 2018, PC in November 2019.
- GTA6: PS5/Xbox Series X|S only on 2026-11-19, no PC announced; $79.99 standard / $99.99 ultimate.
Online
RDR2 has Red Dead Online, but Rockstar moved focus back to GTA Online early on and RD Online updates slowed. GTA6's online mode is unannounced; it launches single-player-first, and single-player has no microtransactions.
The verdict
RDR2 and GTA6 are Rockstar's two extremes: one realistic, slow, inward; one loud, fast, outward. Neither is better, it's just whether you'd rather be a cowboy or a criminal. What are you trying first at launch? Tell me in the comments.
