Straight answer: nobody outside Rockstar knows GTA6's frame rate yet, because Rockstar hasn't said. No 60fps confirmation, no "performance mode" announcement, nothing. But you can narrow it down a lot from the hardware, Rockstar's history, and what they've actually shown.

What's confirmed (the short version)

  • Rockstar has not announced a 30fps or 60fps target, nor a Fidelity/Performance mode split.
  • Trailer 2 was explicitly captured on a base PlayStation 5 — Rockstar said so in the trailer's own description.
  • The PS5 and Xbox Series X can output up to 4K at 120Hz, but that's a display spec, not a GTA6 promise.

That's the whole confirmed list. Everything below this line is a realistic read of it, clearly labeled.

What Rockstar's track record says

Rockstar has a very consistent pattern:

  • RDR2 shipped at 30fps on PS4/Xbox One and, notably, never got a 60fps patch on PS5/Xbox Series X.
  • GTA5 ran 30fps last-gen, then got 60fps years later through GTA5: Expanded & Enhanced.
  • GTA6 is bigger than both — a map roughly twice the size of Los Santos, with dense NPC crowds.

The pattern: Rockstar ships 30fps first and treats 60fps as a later nicety, not a launch promise.

The realistic expectation (not confirmed)

Here's the read I'd bet on:

  • A 30fps "Fidelity" mode is near-certain. Max resolution, max effects — the Rockstar default.
  • A 60fps "Performance" mode is possible but unconfirmed. The hardware can do it at a resolution cost; whether Rockstar bothered is the open question.
  • 120fps is not happening for an open-world game at this scale, whatever the box says.

If 60fps is a dealbreaker for you, don't pre-order on faith — wait for the launch-day breakdown.

What to buy to be ready either way

Since nobody can tell you the frame rate, prepare for the worst case and you're covered:

  • A 120Hz display with HDMI 2.1. Even if the game caps at 30 or 60, a good panel keeps the option open and helps every other game.
  • A console with SSD headroom. GTA6's install size isn't confirmed, but expect 150GB+ — see our storage guide. Xbox Series S is tightest.
  • Don't chase "60fps" marketing now. Any site promising a confirmed 60fps GTA6 is guessing — including the ones selling pre-orders off it.

For the console itself, the PS5 vs Xbox comparison covers the full tradeoff.

Are you holding out for a confirmed 60fps before you buy, or is 30fps fine for a Rockstar game?
