GTA6 controller and accessories: what's actually worth buying

Bottom line: for GTA6, a controller and an SSD are the two things actually worth spending on — the controller decides how the game feels, the SSD decides whether you can even install it. Headphones and a charging dock are nice-to-haves.
One thing first: accessories don't cross platforms
- GTA6 launches 2026-11-19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and accessories follow your console.
- The PS5 controller has adaptive triggers + haptic feedback, which the Xbox controller can't match.
- The physical version is a download code (no disc), so the whole game lands on your SSD — storage matters more than you think.
Which controller
On PS5, the DualSense is the answer. Adaptive triggers give the throttle resistance while driving and trigger tension while shooting; haptics make chases feel physical. Sony also announced two GTA6-themed DualSense colors ($85, out with the game on 11-19) — same controller, new shell, so if you're buying anyway, just get that one.
On Xbox, the controller uses standard rumble, no trigger feedback. The upside is it's cheap and tough, and your existing Xbox pad probably still works fine — no need to upgrade for GTA6.
Third-party controllers (fight sticks, pro pads) usually drop the console-specific features. Unless you need something specific like back paddles, don't buy one for GTA6.
The SSD: the part that'll actually bite you
Rockstar hasn't announced GTA6's install size. A realistic guess is 150GB minimum, 200GB+ not surprising (see the GTA6 file size guide). Against usable space:
| Console | Usable space |
|---|---|
| PS5 | ~667GB |
| Xbox Series X | ~802GB |
| Xbox Series S | ~364GB |
- PS5 with 2–3 AAA games installed → you'll likely want a NVMe SSD (make sure it's PCIe 4.0 rated).
- Series S → GTA6 alone could eat half of it, and expansion is limited to Microsoft's own cards.
- Series X → fine unless you hoard games.
Headphones and charging dock: optional
- Headphones: get one if you play late or want proper immersion; the controller speaker is fine to start.
- Charging dock: DualSense battery life is average, and a dock keeps a full controller ready — a small, cheap buy.
What to buy by budget
- One thing → get the SSD first (not deleting games is the most practical win).
- Room for two → SSD + a GTA6-themed DualSense.
- Xbox players → skip a new controller; put the money into an expansion card or Game Pass.
