Does GTA6 need internet? Offline single-player and online, explained

Bottom line: GTA6's single-player will almost certainly be playable offline — GTA5 always has been — but you'll need internet for the initial download and updates. Online mode isn't there at launch, so always-on internet isn't a thing yet.
What's confirmed
- GTA6 launches 2026-11-19 with single-player only; GTA Online 2 has no date.
- Single-player has no microtransactions — Rockstar confirmed that.
- The digital version downloads over the internet, and the physical version is a download code, so you need internet to activate and download it too.
Can you play single-player offline?
Almost certainly yes. Rockstar's pattern hasn't changed:
- GTA5: once installed, story mode is playable offline.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: same — single-player works offline.
GTA6 will almost certainly follow: install and update, then play single-player offline. Strictly speaking, though, Rockstar hasn't separately confirmed GTA6's offline specifics.
When do you need internet?
- Initial download/install: the digital version downloads the whole game, and the physical version needs internet to activate the code.
- Patches: the day-one patch and later updates all need a connection.
- Online mode (when it arrives): that's always-online by nature.
What this means for you
- Bad internet isn't a blocker: once installed and updated, single-player works offline.
- Don't buy "offline" deals: cheap "offline activation" offers are usually shared accounts or piracy — account-ban risk is on you.
- Want to play at launch → see which console to pick.
