GTA6 wanted system & police AI explained: six stars return, clue tracking and escape tips
Original illustration · six-star wanted level

GTA6's wanted system has been overhauled — police no longer "spawn out of nowhere." This article separates officially confirmed principles from leaked-build / preview details.

Officially confirmed principle

Rockstar co-head Rob Nelson confirmed: "The wanted system requires someone to witness the crime, or an alarm to be triggered, before it's reported." — meaning if nobody sees you, the crime may not immediately summon the police.

Six stars return (per leaked builds, not an official announcement)

  • Six-star wanted levels were absent after GTA4 (GTA5 had only five); leaked footage shows six stars returning in GTA6.
  • The leaker claims the footage is "100% real," but Take-Two keeps issuing DMCA takedowns; the exact mechanics are subject to the final release.

Reworked police AI & pursuit

  • Realistic response times: police arrive based on distance from the precinct, not instant spawning.
  • Persistent identification: police record your appearance, clothing and plate; changing clothes/cars only works if done unseen.
  • Tactical cordon: they use dogs, helicopters and searchlights to set a search perimeter rather than beelining to your hiding spot.
  • Pre-escalation warning: police first shout through a loudspeaker as a warning.

Four star-icon states

IconMeaning
Solid white starPolice have a direct line of sight and are actively chasing
Flashing white starLine of sight lost; police are searching your last known location
Red starPolice lost the trail, but you're still in the searched "hot zone"
Hollow starCrime reported, but you're not yet locked as a suspect

At six stars, the "hot zone" can cover the entire map.

Evidence icons (intel the police hold)

Shown below the wanted stars, these must be cleared one by one:

  • Hanger: your outfit is identified → fully change clothes
  • Person: face/appearance recorded → change hairstyle or alter your look
  • Camera: caught on CCTV → avoid camera-dense areas
  • Car icon: vehicle tracked → abandon the car
  • Two-person icon: Jason and Lucia seen together → split up
  • Weapon icon (mentioned in some preview reports, pending final confirmation): weapon identified

Six-star breakdown

StarsResponse
1 starLocal patrol: verbal warning, minor fine, routine stop
2 starsVice City PD: active pursuit, PIT maneuver, basic roadblocks
3 starsState police + air support: spike strips, spotlight tracking, cordons
4 starsSWAT: armored vehicles, door breaching, snipers
5 starsFederal agency (FIB): highway lockdown, heavy firepower
6 starsMilitary: city-wide lockdown, heavy weapons, aggressive interception

Escape tips

  • Break line of sight: duck into alleys, underground areas or the wilderness.
  • Switch cars unseen: steal a new car when nobody's watching.
  • Wear a mask before the crime: avoid facial identification.
  • Change clothes + hairstyle: invalidate clothing/identity evidence.
  • Split up: clear the "seen together" clue.
  • Blend into crowds: merge into dynamic crowds and indoor spaces.

Much of this detail comes from leaked early builds and preview reports, not official Rockstar announcements; mechanics and thresholds may change in the final release.
